Considering a couple years ago, "Apple Hardware" was an intel CPU with an nvidia GPU I've always wondered why you couldn't just throw a million dollars at them so they could stick apple stickers on your rack and let you

The fact that my headphones, laptop, telephone, and even my electric shaver all use the same (usb-c) charger now is a complete game changer. I can't imagine what kind of hubris Apple has to not snap to that.

Same here, but I want to say some bad things about old thermostats. My first house had propane heating, in a big tank that they would periodically come by and fill, so I had a visceral connection to how much fuel I was using. The previous

It's kind of the way of the world now, not just Google. I've accumulated a ton of stuff that just doesn't work anymore or works in a crippled local-only mode because the service doesn't exist anymore or drivers/sof

"forward looking" Old sensors worked like side-scanning sonar, where the image is built up one row at a time as your vehicle moves forward. Forward looking means you can just point it somewhere and take a 2D picture.

There are some languages (e.g. Russian and English) where you can power through and just memorize a ton of vocabulary and a few conjugation forms. I was just reading an article the other day about Korean, for a counter example though where

Can you even get a car in the US these days that doesn't have a GPS and cellular connection? My 8-year-old BMW has both even though they're not exposed as features in the head unit. (I know because the thing malfunctioned last y

The technique used by the Oregon public school system in the 80s went something like "Hand the child a 10x10 grid of numbers, then tell them, absent of any other context, that they must be memorized." I like your way better.

Not sure if it's everywhere yet, but where I live, QFC and Fred Meyer have started scanning IDs for every alcohol purchase, which is a bit disturbing because that block of data on the back of your ID has a lot more than your birthday o

A couple of months ago, I speculated on this very forum that there must be companies that actively hoover up all of you app and cookie data to build an on-demand profile of you. Someone pointed me to "acxiom", which grudgingly, o
