Yes, interface is important. The Macintosh also had a great GUI... which was copied... why couldn't the iPhone UI be copied? notwithstanding working around patents etc.

(1) If Apple pursues massive mainstream success, it will alienate its traditional supporters, because not everyone in the mainstream values design so highly - some value cheap, performance, convenience or utility etc at the cost of design

Why is refresh rate critical? It's not like an xterm has a lot of animation. Maybe scrolling in vim would be awkward. The only problem with refresh I see is that when you type, there would be a delay before the characters appear. BTW: Someo

The computer in question was pretty much the first personal computer. The correct assumption about the amount of experience of the user with a personal computer was zero.

I would love an e-ink netbook , with 2 week battery life. No colour graphics, just an xterm. Not high speed, but what PC's were like 10 years ago. Of course, that won't find a mass market, so it won't happen. :-(

True in a way, although much of those things follow naturally from creating wealth (i.e. creating value in the world), so much so that if we focus on that, the rest of it works out pretty well. It's like how you can work on building a bette

Yes, sorry; I thought it was a standard abbreviation. Or maybe I've looked at too many rental ads. Perhaps there's a better one? I guess "per month", "/month" and "monthly" all work well, though I'd like a shorter one. Maybe "pm" or "/m". O

I think his advice is: find facts. You can't make decisions without facts - at least, not well-informed ones. Facts about the world and facts about you. Facts that aren't written anywhere. Things you can only learn by experiencing them. Kno

ah, like the prodigal son. (I used to wonder if "prodigal" was a biblical term; but it's just related to the word "prodigious". However, I don't know which came first.)

The change in action figure suggests to me that our innate drive towards physical violence is not getting a natural outlet elsewhere. Traditional outlets include contact sport (ritualized warfare), litigation (ritualized warfare) and chess

This is so much what I want to do, but I don't yet have the... gumption... to actually do it. I also code alone, and probably my income from investments from my lifestyle software product business (about $US 460 pcm) is enough to support it

How do you liberate all your gmail emails? The only way I've seen is to have a POP/IMAP email account, and sync all the messages. A quick google search suggests that's still the case ("there's no easy way to backup a gmail account"). EDIT

So, was Yahoo - or any other search engine - any better? You didn't say how good Yahoo was for your two examples. It's possible that Google doesn't give you perfect results, merely the best of a bad lot. If so, it suggests the problem is th

I was thinking that coders need designers; but you're saying that, in fact, clients are neither. hmm.. I bet that some coders do need designers (e.g. if the coder was hired first), but it's probably a tiny tiny fraction of all clients.
