How do the commercial CA's verify customers before issuing certs? Perhaps she does what they do. I imagine for example she knows her banker, her lawyer, etc. and can contact them by phone or meet with them in person. Maybe she also use

I know a user who runs her own root CA. She only has one "customer": herself. Using the OpenSSL binary the cost is free. She decides which hosts she wants to trust, obtains their certs and signs them. She believes she can trust he

When the user runs her own root, she can make tld's "disappear" by editing a text file. She can also create new ones. Similarly "ICANN" can "create" tld's by editing a text file. As we all know, mo

Danger "v1" (hiptop) was NetBSD. True? Danger "v2" is Linux. True? Microsoft acquired Danger only to eliminate competition. True? I still remember their advert seeking NetBSD developers after the acquisition. I wonde

Is this meant to be a general statement or just a response to some comment? One thing I do not like about the popular "strong" encryption solutions are that they are tied to relatively "weak" authentication solutions. I

"Qmail is too old to be useable..." With regard to age, both qmail and Postfix were written around 1998. For my purposes, qmail works just fine. I use it; therefore it is "useable". For me, Postfix is overkill. Not fac

Interesting that you use the past tense. I am using such a language in the present. And it is working just fine. I have no need for Python but so many people are seemingly trying to coax me to use it. Such is the case for most of the ve

I would go further and call this an obsession with using software that is literally changing by the day, in a constant state of flux. There seems a desire among those users who comment in forums to see recent commits to the software they us

Did you try benchmarking against kdb+? Seems like there are always HN commenters lambasting CSV. I am sure they have very good reasons. But, as for me, CSV is one of my favorite formats. (Sort of like how people like XML or JSON I guess.)

What is ELF? (top) ELF is a binary format designed to support dynamic objects and shared libraries. On older COFF and ECOFF systems, dynamic support and shared libraries were not naturally supported by the underlying format, l

Your last line more or less captures my "intent". The idea is that if someone can reconsider the need for shared libraries, then could she also reconsider the need for ELF? But maybe there are other pertinent reasons that ELF exis

Shared libraries? Forwarding to the present day, with ample inexpensive memory and secondary storage space available, what if for some strange reason I do not use shared libraries in my project? Is there still a need for ELF? Why or why no
