You can lead a horse to water but you can not make it drink. Without the water the horse dies for sure, with the water at least it stands a chance. If those students are that unmotivated then that's one more feather in the cap of the teache

I spent hours playing mastermind as a kid and this modern day re-incarnation is a really nice twist on the theme. Mastermind was a nice primer for Sudoku, and probably those that are good at solving Sudoku are good at solving problems invol

He's a Swedish national, his host is in Sweden. You can determine that from the .se at the end of the domain, the lookup of the domain name which gives you an IP address attached to a router in Stockholm. Sweden is a fairly large country bu

Relay contacts tend to spark when they engage each other. You can get rid of most of that sparking by adding diodes but that would be cheating (semiconductors again), to a lesser extent using small neon bulbs across the coils (that will sti

Yes, the video is mesmerizing. Reminds me of sticking an AM radio into the guts of a 6502 based computer in order to debug a crash to determine whether it was looping or had hit an illegal opcode (the sounds are noticeably distinct).

If you're going to experiment with this make sure you look at things like MTU as well, those are not always set to the optimal size for your link. If you have a high latency link in there somewhere (say you're in the mountains in Colorado a

What an awesome hack. The 3D printing connection, the totally original idea, interesting use of embedded accelerometer... really, this is the kind of thing where I go, 'wow, why didn't I think of that'. Super stuff, and inspiring too. I'd b

It always upsets me when those that won the genetic lottery in some way or other piss on those that lost. Anything to help restore the balance here is a good thing and should be encouraged. Super stuff, really.

This is not as hot as it seems. The RTT quoted (50 ms) is ridiculously slow for most broadband connections. If you really do have a connection that slow then yes, you can improve matters a bit by adjusting the window sizes, here is an artic

TTL was several steps up from ordinary transistors, I don't see how that would be a valid shortcut. You'd still have to make silicon first, as well as a process to create integrated circuits. Simple ones, but still.

Thank you for that link. I took the liberty of re-posting it separately, it is one of the coolest things I've ever seen built. Besides the memory (and that would just add another couple of 10's of thousands of relays for a usable machine) t

The only part where he cheated as far as I can see is the memory, that's a static RAM chip. All the rest of it is relays, it runs at 6(!) Hz. The video is quite amazing.

The wafer is the hard part. That's why I suggested making glass first, it's a good primer on the kind of gear that might one day lead up to the tooling you'll need to make silicon pure enough to make a transistor. You'd be much better off

You really didn't understand the GP I believe. The 'silent majority' are the people who would suffer from this, they won't benefit. A select few will profit (vastly) from being able to sell insurance to those who don't need it and withhold

Good luck with that. Just making glass is going to take you a while. Making semiconductors at a scale that you can start thinking of building a working computer will take you quite a bit longer. It's simple in principle. It would be far eas

I think it is just as evil, just less successful at implementing the evil because Ballmer isn't half as smart as Gates was. Even evil suffers from poor execution.
