I feel like I'm on crazy pills sometimes when talking with people who deal mostly with software. I think SW engineers sometimes think that engineering generally looks like what they do, when in reality SW is a deep outlier wrt process.

At a prior gig we stepped up a machine shop and ended up hiring a stinky kid who I thought was someone's homeless brother. Extremely talented, after our program wound down he started his own machine shop and now does multiple millions

I think that distinction belongs to The Word for World is Forest by Ursula K. Le Guin. It's a short read, a bit polemic and not as strong as some of her other work IMO, but it clearly had some impact on the writers of Avatar .

It was a Scaled Composites project (or at least a lot of Scaled people were working on it! I used to work with an ex-SC guy, they had some nifty codename for it), with Paul Allen bankrolling it. They built and started testing, then Paul die

It's a spectrum. I started to slip at some point, stopped drinking for a year and a half, and now I have an occasional beer with friends and it's not a big deal. Peoples' experiences with alcohol are extremely variable.

Boston is tops for walkability. I think people don't appreciate this if they're not familiar with Boston but you can walk from one side to the other of downtown Boston in 30 mins and pass a half dozen T stations on the way.

I've personally spliced about a dozen optical fibers and I don't even work in telecom :) Not exactly by hand though - all the prep is done by hand but the actual alignment and fusion steps were automated by the fusion splicer mach

I thought electrical wire was generally ~100% Cu. Some of this also comes down to harness design and how it's put back together after the splice. Ideally, the exposure of the splice itself to flexing is very low. I reckon if it's

You have to run the business case (at the end of the day all the work you do has to support this). What's the NRE/tooling and marginal cost to produce a harness variant, and how many units with that variant will you sell? Will peo

I mean that's what my current thermostat actually is. Once you've gone back to touchscreen, as a designer you'll realize that people can't see the tiny text, and you have to display contextually relevant information in l

It's not preferred for inline connections, but context is important. In a field installation, you can do up a solder-type butt splice with a lighter if you really need to, whereas crimping requires specialized tools.

There are DFM tools that you can use on the back end of your design process e.g. through fictiv/protolabs etc. However there is a lot of stuff that is "technically machineable" but way more expensive to do, and it really is a
