Latest I've heard is that it all boils down to calories and that intermittent fasting (time restricted eating or 8/16)makes you lose muscle faster due to low protein during the fasting period. Better to eat less calories and consu

I'm disappointed that the only reference to Futurama in the comments is a tangential one. Anyway, brains in jars are still meat. They're still cells which succumb to the steady accumulation of errors and cellular junk. Brains in

Does plasma gasification result in plastic monomers that can be used as building blocks for new polymers? If not, it seems like it is addressing a different need.

Funny you say that. Literally the first thing I tried to get ChatGPT to do for me was to give me an example gdb extension written in Python. It hallucinated badly and as I pushed it, it produced increasingly erroneous errors. That was ab

One thing I think is sorely lacking is approachable documentation for writing python extensions to GDB. I've managed to cobble together a collection of data structure explorers written in Python but it is barely an improvement over str

Gonna need a lot of power to run all of the air conditioners that will be running in England soon. Spot electricity prices are going through the roof when the wind stops and the thermometer turns red. You'd think Europe would have alr

If I cared, I'd probably wear a couple near-infrared leds and blink them in a random timing pattern and combinations of lights so that cameras which pick up a little NIR would effectively be blinded.

I keep hearing about these things from people telling me how great it is that EVs have so few moving parts yet in almost 3 decades of owning ICE vehicles I've never had to do more repair work under the hood than change a starter, a wat

No thanks. Those are problems for the world's rich to worry about. I have a budget and dependents to take care of. I'm not taking away from my dependents to change the time the earth becomes unlivable by 15 seconds.

Yeah I used to bike commute years ago but gave that up because I don't want to die young. I think I had a Kia for a day when the Bolt was in for the battery recall and it wasn't bad. I still think the Bolt nailed the one-pedal

Same. The Model Y was completely uninspiring. I liked my old Chevy Bolt better. It didn't help that the experience of renting from Hertz was terrible, but renting the Y seemed to confirm every terrible Tesla rumor and then some. It

I really liked my EV, but I had subsidized charging at work. We only have one ICE car now. Every so often I consider upgrading to an EV or hybrid, but why? I'd be spending quite a lot to save very little. Now, I'll admit, getti

My father in law is a mechanic. He just changed a cooling pump and coolant on an EV. There are also other motors to actuate various components.

I absolutely loved my 2019 Chevy Bolt, but the wife did not. It's a great commuter but didn't feel 'cushy'. If they can deliver comfort in a small EV they'll be onto something.

Interesting. I tried to remove imagemagick from Ubuntu 22.04 but it is depended upon by inkscape, calibre and pdfsandwich. I wonder if it's possible for these projects to use GM instead?

This is a big claim, and I'd be interested to hear more. It isn't entirely surprising given that the heart is in constant motion, unlike skeletal muscles which can repair while uncontracted.

My grandpa disowned me after running up $300 on qlink and another $300 in phone charges to BBSes when I was 12. I talked to him briefly on the phone twice after that in the next decade or so before he died and he never got over it.

There may be a bias here due to some correlation between employment status and participation in online discussion forums. Anyway, for what it's worth, I've heard it is increasingly difficult for experienced devs to get jobs now.
