About 40 years ago, when I was growing up in Southeastern Europe, in a place greatly influenced by both the Ottoman and the Habsburg empires, I do remember my grandma lying down in bed (covered) with one-two of her girlfriends after having lunch, coffee, and a cigarette. They were fully clothed and they continued chatting while lying on top of a made bed. The men were all gone to work during the day. Such a behavior would raise an eyebrow in the US, but it was completely normal in that corner of the world at the time.
