- the_watcher 11y agoFacebook offers something that basically every human has some interest in: a way to keep in touch with each other, no matter where you are, and feel like you are still a part of that person's life. Twitter offers something that's highly, highly useful, to a much smaller number of people. It's limited feature set is the reason those who love it (such as me) love it, but it necessarily limits their ceiling in terms of users. Twitter shouldn't be comparing itself to Facebook, it should compare itself to LinkedIn (in that it's a product that is highly useful for a large, but not infinite number of humans)
- batiudrami 11y agoTwitter is a strange beast. I know plenty of people who have an account to follow others, but only one person in my circle of (real life) friends who actually tweets things. I feel like the Bay Area tends to overestimate the pervasiveness of Twitter because everyone there uses it - in the same way you'd be under the impression that Apple dominates the PC market if your only experience was downtown coffee shops.
- joelrunyon 11y agoTwitter solves a much better "news feed" infrastructure. That said, it's much better at being a protocol (similar to email) than a straight business (a la facebook).
- quadrangle 11y agoFacebook is a terrible example of "straight business".
- joelrunyon 11y agoNot really, they're a pretty textbook advertising platform business.
- quadrangle 11y ago"advertising platform" is a terrible example of "straight business". The fact that such non-straight businesses pre-date the internet is irrelevant.
