In looking at that thread (from the OP) I am wondering how much the algorithm, among other things, takes into account the appearance of comments downvoted to oblivion. I would guess that that needs to be a factor considered. A quick scan of that link seems to indicate many grayed out comments. (Which I didn't read..)
