"oh no" that Firefox is dropping support for a slightly older technology (again)?
"oh no" that GTK2 is a sinking ship that everyone is fleeing from?
or do you mean "oh no" that Firefox is going to be at the center of yet another incendiary (and ultimately fruitless) debate.
Because I can agree that any one of those is a good reason to say "oh no".
- __david__ 11y agoI've been out of the gtk loop for a while now—I built a couple apps on gtk2 back in the day. What is wrong with gtk3? Why would this be controversial at all?
- keithpeter 11y agoGood question. Suppose I have a KDE based desktop which I gather uses qt as the widget library. Am I going to have another subset of libraries to run Firefox?
- JoshTriplett 11y agoYou would whether Firefox used GTK+2 or GTK+3.
- cjsthompson 11y agoGtk+ 3 is part of the modern degenerate conspiracy along with systemd and other abominations such as kdbus to destroy Linux by straying from the time-honored ancestral traditions of UNIX which were devised when men were still true hardworking men, that spent hours of sweat and tears configuring their window managers and compiling kernel modules as was ordained by the ancients.

- newuserggs 11y agoggs ... if you feel this way then create a for profit service that makes money ... like nginx ... keeping things alive is about having minions to work for you
- mhogomchungu 11y agoBelow link may shed some light on gtk3 controversy. https://igurublog.wordpress.com/2012/11/05/gnome-et-al-rotting-in-threes/ https://igurublog.wordpress.com/2012/11/05/gnome-et-al-rotti...
- mwfunk 11y agoI don't have a definitive answer, but I think it'd be from association with Gnome 3, which draws out all sorts of pointless and tiresome flame wars amongst people who thrive on creating (and then wading into) emotionally charged drama about software, of all things. :(
- jeltz 11y agoIt is the new theming engine in gtk3 which does not seem mature (or maybe there just are no good skins yet).
- blackle 11y agoIts actually because I hate gtk3 theming. Every update seems to break something & figuring out what css rule to change is hell and a half. So my knee-jerk reaction to say 'oh no' is just frustration that yet another app is going to start looking funny every time I update my system
- JoshTriplett 11y agoPersonally, I'm happy that Firefox will finally respect the theming that applies to all of my other applications.
- cbd1984 11y agoI'm voting for "bowl of petunias", and it got cut off before it could say "not again". The relevance of the "not again" is immediately apparent to people who've gone through a few GUI toolkits.
- whoopdedo 11y agoI would have thought the whale would be more appropriate seeing as we're talking about GTK+3 (and thus by association, GNOME).
