Show HN: Schyntax – A friendlier-than-cron syntax for scheduled tasks
- skibz 11y agoDefinitely friendlier than Cron :D Excellent work, @bretcope.
- Zikes 11y agoI love the syntax! Have you considered setting it up as a cron pre-processor? It would ease integration into existing systems and let people adopt the easy new syntax, without replacing their entire scheduled tasks architecture.
- bretcope 11y agoThat's interesting. You mean essentially a transpiler either from cron->schyntax or schyntax->cron? The former seems more doable, since I think there are more schedules schyntax can represent which cron can't, though a subset could work in either direction. I've also considered a native utility https://github.com/schyntax/schyntax/issues/2 https://github.com/schyntax/schyntax/issues/2 as an outright replacement for cron, which could benefit from a transpiler. If there is interest in this, I'd definitely be open to discussing it more on github.
- jbandela1 11y agoSecond the above. Syntax is very user friendly. Unfortunately, it seems with C# that it is mostly a Windows solution. A cron preprocessor would allow it to be used in a lot more places.
- bretcope 11y agoIt's not just C#. I did the JavaScript port from scratch in about 8 hours. There's no reason other languages couldn't be added if there is enough interest.
- richerlariviere 11y agoThis is expressive and beautiful. However CRON is easy to setup using sites like http://www.cronmaker.com/ http://www.cronmaker.com/.
- bretcope 11y agoIt's not just about the person who creates the schedule. It's about anyone being able to understand, at a glance, what it means.
- PeterWhittaker 11y agoWell done!
