You can't just re-invent new housing or transit. You have to approach it iteratively and look at a larger time scale. Right now we're seeing new entrants applying the fact we mostly all have computers on us to create non-trivial increased market efficiency in a couple of industries. Once these companies establish a foot hold they can generate new competitors and make even bigger waves. Uber's pool may not be how we all travel around in twenty years but I'd bet it'll look something like it. And those vehicles may not be Telsas but they'll probably be electric and have auto-updating features.
