I will confirm that these numbers are accurate. I've heard that bonus percentages improve when you reach Staff.
Google also has, interesting enough, High Compensation Plans (HCPs) for people it's trying to bring in from finance. On an HCP, you get faster promotions and usually you are on the management ladder, which is much easier to climb, especially past level 7+. So, if you come from Wall Street, you can be a Software Manager III or Director but write code full time.
- packetslave 11y agoYou worked there for 6 months, and it was 4 years ago. You're hardly in a position to "confirm" anything.
- michaelochurch 11y agoYou are incorrect if you think that that's my only source of information. Please leave and let the adults talk.
- dang 11y ago> Please leave and let the adults talk. You know that personal attacks are not ok here.
- michaelochurch 11y agoI have no idea who he is on a "personal" basis. I am attacking the quality of one contribution, which is demonstrably low. He (or she) could be a great person and I'd have no idea, and frankly, it doesn't matter to this thread of discussion. To be frank, you are trying way too hard to impose Bay Area Passive-Aggressive Culture on the rest of us. It's not a "personal attack" to acknowledge the low quality and demonstrated immaturity in someone's message-board post. It's necessary. It keeps all of us in check (and, yes, even I need to be kept in check from time to time). It's also not "negativity" to point out that there's a lot of moral rot and frank stupidity going on (and that will hurt all of us, when the chickens come home to roost) in the Bay Area tech scene. The best way to keep Clinkles rare is to bash them mercilessly when they happen. One of the reasons why the Bay Area is such a horrible place right now (and it wasn't always that way) is that the leading venture capitalists are people with absolutely no sense of shame about anything, because they've warped the "anything goes" California culture of the 1960s into this idea that they can fund Clinkles and not be mocked for it. Bring in a few proper Northerners wielding Hammers of Judgment, and it will change. There are times when ridicule is the most potent moral force, and we are in one such era. To block it, under the supposition that it's "negative", is to foster a world in which no one knows right from wrong, quality from garbage, up from down or left from right. It's to create a world in which grown men and women wearing unicorn costumes on Youtube to promote their businesses, is tolerated. (See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMJIBxtDUHc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMJIBxtDUHc ). Fuck that shit. I don't attack anonymous Internet identities "personally". I attack stupidity, and it's a necessary function.
- dang 11y agoTelling someone to "leave" and that they aren't an "adult" is plainly a personal attack whether you know their real name or not.
- michaelochurch 11y agoTelling someone to "leave" is saying that he's not contributing. I should probably leave this thread, which I think only you and I care about. That's not an insult to me. There are conversations in which I am not useful and should not enter, or should leave if I do enter them. Implying that someone isn't an adult isn't an insult either. If someone's 5 years old, it's not an insult to call that person a child. Likewise, I call my cats, "cats", and my friends' dogs, "dogs", and no one seems to be offended. If someone who I don't know acts like a child, I will presume that that person is a child. If someone posts "sdj;;;s;dksk;ld;sdkl;sd" I will presume that a cat walked across the keyboard. Is this offensive?
- dang 11y agoThis is obfuscatory spin. That comment broke HN's most important rule. This is obvious—it's not like it was a borderline call. The rule applies to everyone. Please follow it.

- ectoplasm 11y agoIt's just bizarre that the rule doesn't apply to packetslave. Snide personal remarks based on truth are okay? Scare quotes around the word "confirm"?
- dang 11y agoI see nothing wrong with the quotes, nor do I read that comment as snide, exactly. But you're right that the use of personal details as ammunition is not ok.
