Subscribing to high volume mailing lists from gmail is something I would actually advise against. I had legitimate emails bouncing because the mailing list had put me over the maximum number of emails that a free Google account can recieve in a day. I didn't even know there was such a limit until I hit it. I now run my own mail server and have none of these or the other problems outlined here.
