Apparently Pyrex is no longer borosilicate.
- eonw 11y agoaren't pyrex and swarovski just patented 'recipes' for making glass?
- gwern 11y agoPatents run out. Swarovski presumably is keeping it as a trade secret, which is riskier but probably far more profitable in the long run (especially if they've managed to keep the core secrets this long).
- eonw 11y agowithout their amazing marketing ability, having the same glass really isnt that useful, so i guess trade secret does make more sense in this light.
- greglindahl 11y agoIn the US, apparently, there's a new and cheaper Pyrex that's ordinary tempered glass. Elsewhere, it still the good stuff: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyrex https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyrex
- kps 11y agoThe article also mentions soda-lime Pyrex® products from the '30s. ‘Pyrex’ has been nothing more than a brand name for a long, long time.
