I think this could be part of the problem. When I was growing up and my dad was getting good work and saving up money, my mom demanded that he move us out of our bad neighborhood. None of my cousins who stayed behind graduated high school, but my siblings and I all went to college. I'm Hispanic and I never felt like that hindered my job prospects in tech.
