Ask HN: Why can I push to Heroku but not GitHub over unsecure wifi?

I can push/deploy my project to Heroku when using free unsecure wifi, but not Github. They both use ssh keys don't they? Also, should I not be pushing up over unsecure wifi; even if the work is open source and contains nothing valuable within the code? Thanks.
