Apologies for the late reply, so you may not see this. "Were you working in a for-profit genetics lab when you realized that FOSS was so important?" Exactly it. I had a very tight budget and therefore I was really pushed towards free licenses for that reason, but also because I think FOSS licenses have not yet fully disproven many eyes theory.
