As far as I know, electric cars failed then because of the same problems we have now- power storage. As bad as LiPos are, what they had was even worse. It didn't help that gas engines had a lot of improvement possibilities then, and we've only really recently been able to reach that same level of improvement in electrical motors. Gas engines are a dying beast, the only thing they're better at is the sound.
