I've tried using XKeymacs (http://www.cam.hi-ho.ne.jp/oishi/indexen.html http://www.cam.hi-ho.ne.jp/oishi/indexen.html) to this end, but had problems with the previous Thunderbird. Perhaps I should try again with 3.0.
