I've spent my life learning technology from others. More often than not I've found the IT community to be hypercritical and unfriendly. This appears to be somewhat mitigated with older crowds, which leads me to believe that it may just be a maturity factor. The root cause, as best I can tell, is that people who have heavily invested in technical fields evaluate their self worth, and maybe their distinguishing value to society, in terms of their knowledge relative to others. So a new person who is not at their position, but climbing their way towards it, is a threat. I may be wrong but what I am certain of is that spending your life dealing with IT people online is not for the faint of heart.
