I doubt whether people will continue paying high salaries for hacking up crud apps. Concretely, I expect the peak salaries for people who program for a living to continue to increase more or less monotonically. However, I also expect the average salary in the field to fluctuate, and I believe that in 40 years from now, these past few years will stand out on an inflation-adjusted graph as "the good years".
