I agree with you completely, people should be measured with how they respond to things they perceive negatively. Anything ad hominen has no relevance to the discussion. Being called "absurd" and/or "stupid" to me (or my ideas) isn't a big deal to me. In responding I had not considered the point that for some that isn't an acceptable thing to say, which is totally fair.
