In the mid 00's I was working for a cashback/incentive site. Basically we would give monetary incentive to members of our site to complete whatever each specific ad was measuring. It could be signing up for a newsletter, or registering an account at some site. Poker websites would pay well for new users. The whole scheme was of dubious value for the advertisers, obviously. The ad networks were happy to have us, though.
