I have recently jumped onto working for a very huge codebase at work. In general here are a few tricks that helped me.
1) Look at the unit tests and see the flow of the code
2) Try to make a mental picture of how the code is organized(doing it on paper is more helpful)
3) Every codebase has few core classes that do lot of heavy lifting, talk to other contributors and ask them to point you to these.2) also helps you achieve this.
