What happens when a member of a gay couple gets sick in a state that doesn't recognize gay marriages? What do gay couples do when they file their federal taxes?
- SilasX 11y agoThey file with different statuses on the different tax forms. If there were a constitutional right to easy income tax filing, we'd be in violation for a long time now :-p
- giaour 11y agoCurrently, you can file your federal taxes as "married" if you got married in any state that recognizes marriage equality. This right does not end when you move to a different state, so there are couples who have to file as two singles in Alabama but as married to the federal government because they got married in Vermont. So, the answer to your second question is: status quo. The first question would probably decided by a judge.
- FireBeyond 11y agoThey don't get to see their loved one in the hospital as a "family member". As has happened countless times.
