No Sex Jokes Please, French Government Advises Travelers to U.S
- anon3_ 11y agoPolitical correctness in USA is very destructive. It's amazing how blind so-called "compassionate-class" can be of other cultures. In latin culture, being masculine is normal. In other cultures, it's not frowned upon to court a women in public, it's romantic. Americans are often due for a huge culture shock if they decide to live abroad. Many shelter themselves in tour groups or resorts. I highly recommend Americans humble themselves and realize they're not the center of the Earth.
- petercooper 11y agoLet's be fair though. American culture and American standpoints are not any worse than others for these reasons, merely different. One person's "political correctness" is another person's "code of conduct."
- seivan 11y agoAt what point will you stop justify said "code of conduct"? Asking for Raif Badawi.
- collyw 11y agoNo only in the US, see what happened with Tim Hunt for example.
- aikah 11y ago> Many shelter themselves in tour groups or resorts. And french people tend to stay together, they don't mix. I've seen this in Quebec where french people despise and often make fun of "locals" and leave in specific areas. Being French doesn't make one automatically more open minded, on the contrary, our reputation of being arrogant is totally justified. American or French it takes some effort to adapt a foreign culture.
- lotsofcows 11y agoSurely this applies to all minority groups all over the world? Some people mix in - some form tight knot groups. The latter is usually the more visible, almost by definition.
- cholantesh 11y agoWhat definition of masculinity includes desperately shouting obscenities at unfamiliar women? And having had close female friends, even a few romantic partners who are Latin American, I wonder if they were really tolerating it when they returned those 'courting calls' with acid wit and an occasional slap.
- cbd1984 11y ago> I highly recommend Americans humble themselves and realize they're not the center of the Earth. I highly recommend you get over your bigotry and stop stereotyping a whole country's worth of people.
- return0 11y agoI dont think the americans should take offense at this. It's just a cultural quirkiness, like tipping or haggling.
- Udo 11y agoI don't see anything on that list that's not sensible. It makes sense to brief visitors about behavior that can get them into actual trouble when going to a foreign country. It's not a judgement either way.
- m_t 11y agoFor the one wondering, here's the page on the Ministry of Foreign Affair: http://www.diplomatie.gouv.fr/fr/conseils-aux-voyageurs/conseils-par-pays/etats-unis-12311/ http://www.diplomatie.gouv.fr/fr/conseils-aux-voyageurs/cons... It's in the "Infos Utiles" tab, under "Us et coutumes". Those are simple and pretty straight forward advices on how to behave in a foreign country. Those advices exists for all the world countries, and are very factual. I'm not sure what is Bloomberg point in fact. "Foreign ministry gives sensible advices to travellers" could be the title of the article.
- a3n 11y agoI took the point to be an invitation to consider how others view us.
