I think the future is something like prefabricated / disposable / immutable(ish) infrastructure. Stop managing servers, start managing your service. Containers are a big part of that - they made the idea more palatable and usable. But if you're doing this BECAUSE of Docker and containers and PaaS being cool, rather than the benefits of disposability and prefabrication in enabling stable / predictable scale out , availability, and change management of your bits, you've probably already lost. Netflix arguably started this cloud-native wave. They still use VMs.
