  But, but, democracy! And voting! And "representative" government! Snarky comment aside. I definitely agree with you, and I'm often very surprised that these sorts of "controversial" topics don't actually get tested. By tested I mean, put to a referendum. Yes, that means getting the majority of the voting populace to be asked which side of the fence they're on for that specific topic/idea/law.
