I haven't gone through U.S. customs but I have been through Canadian and European customs, and both times the people at the border were very polite (they did have a dog sniffing my luggage, but nothing beyond that). The chance of them making trouble is small, but I would try to implement some measure others suggested just in case (having a Windows dual-boot or something).
