I don't think using proprietary platforms such as Xbox 360 or iOS as examples constitutes a trend in the field of Computer Science. It's more likely that Apple will reject your iOS app for some reason than it is that you won't be able to "innovate." If you want to innovate on iOS and create something truly spectacular, you should be seeking employment or simply be satisfied hacking the provided device yourself.
I would consider this article's content far more substantial if there was an example of this architecture being used in, say, Linux 4.
