I think Google's design is still in early stages. It seems like they're taking a bit of a wrong turn in the direction of busy, cluttered UIs - their original approach of simplicity was successful because it didn't get in the way. Making it look pretty while keeping it simple is challenging. I expect it will take them a long time, and we'll have to grumble through it.
