It could be that many people have a yearning to work with and produce something tangible after all those years of working with abstract columns of numbers. I think we've discussed a similar psychological tendency amongst hackers before as well, in terms of the desire to create things. After all, when given a Lego set most kids build something out of the bricks instead of just laying them out and counting them.
