  That's a guideline I disagree with pretty strongly. For my part, I'd say downvoting usually doesn't do any good. There's not much that's edifying to communicating to someone that you don't like what they said. But there's a lot of value in communicating to someone why you don't like what they said. The downvote's a feature that really needs to be removed from sites like HN. Keep the upvote; that does something constructive. But the downvote has an almost strictly adverse impact on the quality of discourse, and for that reason alone I'm more than happy to use opportunities to encourage people to use their talking words.
