The task they did do, that needed doing, was causing a shift in thinking that was tantamount to the shift you undergo when you learn Prolog, having only been exposed to Assembler. By abstracting away the storage model, you can reuse the same database calls in the browser (SQLite), on one machine (MySQL/Postgres), or on a cluster, and you're free to think about more business-specific logic.
