When I started participating on HN, the general consensus for downvoting was for posts that were off-topic, poorly written, trollish, vile, etc. Never downvote to disagree.
Disagree by writing a thoughtful, reasoned response. Dissect the points that matter, ask for clarification, provide your own clarification.
