I would flip that around and put it this way: - what can you write about that you know well - does that thing attract any sort of audience as well? Trying to pick a target topic is very difficult unless you have a deep interest. I could probably try and write some articles about Angular, people seem interested in that. But I'm not that excited about it and would lose interest, and wouldn't make the distance. I keep a to-blog journal and write topics down in that as the thoughts come to me. Only the things you're interested in are worth writing about - otherwise the writing will be dull, and you'll give it up because it is too much work.
