Don't mean to seem like a jerk but I have the following things to ask and say :
1) Why would you go to a Google interview knowing that working for them would be a conflict of interest ? That seems very odd and questionable to me.
2) You're in debt and out of work (or so it appears). Perhaps dropping everything, selling your stuff and/or borrowing money to visit them may not be in your or their best interest right now. Consider that.
3) You seem to have a history of issues (googled your name). You may need to consider that your decision making abilities may be impaired - especially if you're upset about something. Have a discussion with your friends and family before you take any serious steps.
All the best and I hope it works out for your friend.
- MichaelCrawford 11y agoIf you google my name, you're also going to find some completely different guy who looks somewhat like me, did time in Walla Walla commencing in 2005, then perished in a shootout with the Tacoma police a couple years ago. I terminated the interview process after I decided it would be a conflict of interest. I didn't go to mountain view, I had several phone interviews. I was expecting to go to mountain view when I withdrew. I would give my life for that of another, even a complete stranger. In general I make decisions like this without any consideration for my own best interest; to the extent that I do consider it, it's over things like my sentimental attachment to my Xeon box. There are times that my decision making abilities are indeed impaired, but I don't think I'm symptomatic in that way presently. I've been sleeping too much lately - "hypersomnia" - which is commonly a symptom of depression, however I am not otherwise depressed. My family is not useful for these kinds of discussions, I might as well have such a discussion with my cat. Friends though are commonly helpful.

- brudgers 11y agoSomething needing to be prefaced with, "I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but...", will likely be more constructive with the benefit of robust editing. There's no idea in your comment that requires taking the risk of sounding like a jerk, and the strained circumstances in the original post make a deliberate decision to run the risk of sounding like a jerk unconscionable.
- MichaelCrawford 11y agoNo worries. I've been an active kuro5hin member for 13 years. You Have Absolutely No Idea.
- brudgers 11y agoI am concerned about the general effect of such comments on HN's quality while realizing that they are habits that people develop elsewhere on the internet...that's where mine honed.
