Show HN: Pyre – A command-line interface for Tinder
- Jarred 11y agoCan it show pics via ASCII art?
- smacktoward 11y agoYes, but they all come out ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
- TazeTSchnitzel 11y agoThat's not ASCII, that's Unicode (or Shift-JIS, or JIS X 0201...)
- nickysielicki 11y agoor via framebuffer! http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/gutsy/man1/fbi.1.html http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/gutsy/man1/fbi.1.html
- philsnow 11y agoOr, if you want to evoke the 70s for ... some reason... use tektronix terminal emulation built into xterm: http://www.dim13.org/teapot http://www.dim13.org/teapot
- strangecasts 11y agoIt'd be doable to set up something with aalib[1] or libcaca[2] (for color support) - the resolution would be pretty bad though ;) I'd give it a shot myself, but unfortunately I'm not familiar with Go or Tinder's API. - baldfat 11y agoJust use feh and you would be all set. EDIT: feh is a X11 command line image viewer. I use it all the time with w3m (Console web browser) [] http://feh.finalrewind.org/ http://feh.finalrewind.org/
- psychometry 11y agoSerious question: Why does Tinder need an API?
- debaserab2 11y agoWhat else are their native apps supposed to use?
- edgyswingset 11y agoI think the OP may be referring to a public API. I can't think of any positive practical uses for the public API as-is. In the hands of a more malicious person, it could be a tool to automate harassing users.
- QuotedForTruth 11y agoI havent seen a truely positive use of the API either. In fact they've had problems with it. There was an exploit at one point that allowed you to ask the API "how far from my current position is this person" and it returned a very precise distance based on both user's gps. If you then moved your location (just the argument, no need to actually move), you could triangluate the other users exact location. Tinder fixed that by fuzzing the distance and giving less precision. There are also apps that auto like everyone. This sort of defeats the purpose of the app. Tinder didnt seem to really mind though. They did eventually limit the number of "likes" each user can have in a day, but added a pay option ot bypass it too.
- derefr 11y ago> There are also apps that auto like everyone. This sort of defeats the purpose of the app. It's what a lot of people do anyway, though. Why not automate an action if it's the action people want? (Farming/grinding bots in MMOs, for example.) If the service doesn't like it, they can always put a stop to it by changing the incentive structure of their "game."

- bshimmin 11y agoGreat name choice!
- fake-name 11y agoIt should probably be noted that this is apparently for the "2015 Stupid Shit No One Needs & Terrible Ideas Hackathon" (https://stupidhackathon.github.io/ https://stupidhackathon.github.io/). So... yes, the point is that it's stupid and amusing.
- graublau 11y agoThe prize categories are hilarious.
- alphonse23 11y agoThere was another one, with the same name held in New York last year: http://www.stupidhackathon.com/ http://www.stupidhackathon.com/, funny how this one has the same name, but this one has a github.io address. The SF hackathon didn't have nearly as many sex toys...
- joshu 11y agoDifferent people. I asked.
- skizm 11y agoI like how both "prize" and "categories" are in quotes.
- zachlatta 11y agoOriginally had "(stupid hackathon project)" in the title, but it was removed by the mods.
- fake-name 11y agoI'd assume that the probably thought you were calling it stupid, rather then that there is literally a hackathon called "stupid hackathon".
- ljk 11y agothis is a pretty good idea, like a "don't judge a book by its cover" version of tinder.. but that kind of goes against the whole point of tinder, right?
- nichochar 11y agoMan I WISH i knew about this hackathon! Does someone know a good resource to keep up to date with upcoming hackathons (in SF or just by city, or even global and i'll filter)?
- whorleater 11y agohttp://challengepost.com/discover http://challengepost.com/discover - is usually what I've seen being used as the de facto hackathon organizing site.
- whiskeySix 11y agoWhat's the over/under on the number of people this will get laid? I'm putting it at 1.
- grimmdude 11y agoExactly what I was looking for; a command line interface for an image based dating service. What's up with this 'command line for everything' fad? Balls to britches
- osetinsky 11y agoI'd really like to see ASCII representations of my matches.
- myblake 11y agoYeah some of us in the audience were wondering the same thing, where's the ASCII pics?!
- twic 11y agoWhy is everything a Go CLI these days? This should totally be a Ruby gem!
- ufmace 11y agoAt first I thought I should write one the next time I'm bored for a while. Then I googled and found that it already exists. Naturally. https://github.com/nneal/tinder_pyro https://github.com/nneal/tinder_pyro
- mpnordland 11y agoLove that it's called Pyre. Who's dead?
