Of course they could all be running windows on those macs!
WHO CARES!
- rbanffy 17y agoRunning Windows on a Mac is just wrong... I really miss the Windows-proof PowerPC Macs of yore ;-) But... If they want to know where the world is going, they should really reach for those few who don't use their products. You can't predict the future just from looking into the mainstream.
- wtallis 17y agoI'm typing this on a MacBook Pro running Vista x64. It's a MBP because those are really powerful machines, but still have great battery life and are very compact and portable. It's running Vista x64 because I'm doing scientific computation that involves Windows-only software (mainly SolidWorks). It feels weird and a bit dirty, but I'm pretty sure there isn't another mobile hardware platform that can meet my needs as well as the MBP. I still boot into OS X when I'm doing something like watching a movie or if I'm "off the clock" and doing personal stuff with the machine. It constantly reminds me of just how big a difference there is between Windows and OS X in terms of everyday usability.
- rbanffy 17y ago"involves Windows-only software". Fine. You have an excuse. And you also use OSX when you ar nor working. That's a plus ;-) My main computer is a Linux netbook, but I also have to run XP from time to time (inside a VM, obviously). My bank requires an ActiveX control for the business accounts. I think it's incredibly ironic they found a way to require Windows for security reasons.
- eli 17y agoIt's not "wrong" if you're developing for Microsoft platforms.
- rbanffy 17y agoIt's wrong in at least three levels. - You are running Windows on a Mac. That's wrong #1. And it is really bad - there is a circle of hell dedicated to Windows users on Macs. It was opened in 2005. - You are developing for Microsoft platforms. That's wrong #2. It was felt that there was no need to dedicate a circle of Hell to these folks because developing for MS platforms is punishment enough. - You are probably using Microsoft tools. That's wrong #3, but probably a consequence of wrong #2. Again, it is self-inflicted suffering. It's a question of taste. And a business decision. You could probably do the same with a cheaper Lenovo, HP or Dell. Obviously they are uglier than a Mac, but, again, Windows is uglier than anything else with the possible exception of AIX with CDE, so they are a match. The only way to run Windows on a Mac and dodge eternal damnation is to do it inside a VM, preferably a stateless one. ;-)
- vorador 17y agoWhat's wrong with developping for ms platforms ? Have you tried the latest versions of visual studio ?
- rbanffy 17y agoI prefer to develop for wider audiences. I know it's just a little more people (Windows has 90+%, after all), but a monoplatform world is incredibly boring. Having a x86 inside all our computers is monoplaformity enough for me. And I think people failed to notice my attempted humour, even with the ";-)" at the end of the message... sigh... As for Visual Studio, the last version I used was the 2005. I was finding the Visual Studio series increasingly more complicated and not particularly elegant. I am much happier with Emacs, dynamic languages and uncomplicated web frameworks. Not to say OSs people can actually understand.
- steveplace 17y agoIt's a question of taste Then how can it be right or wrong? Does it not then depend on the subject and not the object?
- icefox 17y agoAnd the two "PC" laptops could be running Linux! Who cares!
- rbanffy 17y agoTheir users care!
