The airlines don't even automatically rebook passengers for the next flight automatically when you don't board a flight (you scan your ticket when you board, so they know). I've missed several connecting flights, and every time I had to spend 10 minutes talking to a person - why not just automatically email me a ticket for the next available flight, along with a phone number to call if I want to change it (or let me walk up to a person)?
