Cisco gave me a written test. I was left alone in a room with the test, some paper and a ball-point pen. One question asked me to debug some C++ code - without a computer mind you. Another asked me to reverse engineer a hex dump of a network packet. I don't recall what the third problem was. It was only after I completed the written test, and my interviewer looked over my answers, that we had an actual face-to-face interview. It is quite puzzling to me that that's not commonly done.
