I met my ex-girlfriend (now wife) at a female friends barbecue party while living in a new city and following the rule of "I have to say yes to any invitation by anyone to anything". My previous girlfriend and I met at a local disco, where a common friend introduced us. In my personal experience: extended networks of friends is where it's at. YMMV.
