Spire (YC W15) is hiring a data scientist to understand the world's breathing
Spire (YC W15) is looking for a data scientist to join our team.
Spire builds respiration sensing wearables that take bio-sensing beyond step tracking. Our sensor continuously and accurately tracks respiratory parameters (such as inhalation and exhalation time, apneic events, etc.) and activity (steps, gait, posture) in realtime, streaming raw data to a smartphone or watch, and ultimately to our infrastructure. Each day we collect, store, and process over 2^32 data points.
Our first product, a consumer wearable available at www.spire.io, uses respiratory patterns to infer a wearer’s state-of-mind (tense, calm, focused). A complementary app provides feedback that lowers tension and increases calm and focus in everyday life. Clinical applications of the device and technology are currently being piloted.
Our goal is to make a meaningful impact on the life of everyone who breathes.

Responsibilities
- Research, propose, and implement quantitative methodologies to solve a diverse range of statistical problems centered around turning raw sensor time series data into insights and user actions.
- Translate research into algorithms in shipping products that affect our customers' lives in measurable ways. Measure those ways.
Requirements
- A strong quantitative background. This _usually_ means a BS, MS, or PhD in fields like Statistics, Economics, Physics, Computer Science, or Mathematics.
- A deep understanding of probability and statistics, including experimental design, randomization and blocking, error types and loss, frequentist vs. Bayesian approaches, filter design, hetero vs homoskedasticity, etc, etc, etc.
- Highly proficient with a modeling/analytics language of your choice (Python, R, etc) and relational databases.
- Familiarity with supervised and unsupervised machine learning approaches.
- Time series analysis is your bread and butter.
- Familiarity with Linux development environments – you know your way around a shell and aren't afraid of a git merge conflict.
- Retain statistical rigor while driving product development forward at a rapid pace.
- Constantly attentive to detail and devoted to quality.
