I wish to go out like this. I would rather meet my end in a quick instant while on vacation in Mexico than over 10 years with dementia in a old folks home. He got all the perks of a good life without having to experience the downsides of becoming old and frail.
- andrewguenther 11y agoIs this really the way you would want to leave your family though?
- droopyEyelids 11y agoI don't know if you've dealt with any relatives getting dementia, but I don't believe anything could be worse than your brain and personality dying and leaving your relatives with a failing living body. One of the things dementia destroys is your ability to swallow. Most demented people end up dying of pneumonia after getting some food in their lungs. That means one of most time consuming and simple parts of your body's day needs to be constantly supervised and aided, which means either your family giving up a huge part of their life to babysitting a horrible flesh golem, or paying an enormous amount of money for some sort of care worker. Yes, I would MUCH rather leave my family after falling off a treadmill than dementia. I'd rather have a heart attack or brain aneurism or get sucked into a wood chipper in front of my whole family than mentally die of dementia and leave behind my body— burden almost beyond imagination— while destroying their memory of who I was.
- MichaelGG 11y agoDoesn't dementia come on a bit slowly? At first sign of irreversible damage, setup a good bye party and take some opiate+benzo injection
- GabrielF00 11y agoHopefully not at age 47.
- ribs 11y agoYeah...I like to say that I want to die by getting hit by a bus from behind. Thinking about it now I would amend the scenario to include me listening to music on headphones, so I don't hear it coming. It's good to be alive.
- jrowley 11y agoIt wasn't necessarily the quickest way to go from the sounds of things. When they found him he was still alive. http://www.santacruzsentinel.com/obituaries/20150504/reports-dave-goldberg-husband-of-facebooks-sheryl-sandberg-died-after-hitting-head-on-treadmill http://www.santacruzsentinel.com/obituaries/20150504/reports...
- downandout 11y agoAlive but undoubtedly unconscious and unaware (if he were conscious he would have reached for his phone).
