Consider the cost of a replacement battery and if it's worth the subconcious mental strain this consideration places on you.
In short, leave it in because it's not worth worrying about.
- therobot24 12y agoseriously, i can get a battery for my T410 for ~20$ on amazon, i'm not going to spend my time plugging and unplugging.
- keithpeter 12y agoAgreed. I do leave small laptop on suspend overnight (not plugged in) and then I do use it on the train into work, so a small charge/discharge cycle each day. The big typing box laptop (ancient T61p) is left on and plugged in a lot. May use a timer switch on the wall plug simply to reduce reliance on the overcharge protection in the battery/charger. I think those with devices that have batteries that cannot be replaced may be more concerned.
- cmavr8 12y agoSure, but do you know what cells these batteries use? They're usually cheap chinese ones, of less than half the rated capacity. A proper replacement will cost much more. I did go mid-way, buying high quality Japanese cells and installing them in a chinese pack. A bit cheaper than a new official battery, but required some work.
- adrusi 12y agoAssuming your computer has a replaceable battery, which is not the case always. Replacing a $80 battery is worth it to avoid stress, but replacing a $2000 ultrabook may not be.
- TheGRS 12y agoI would think your ultrabook would be past its manufacturer's warranty anyway at that point anyway and would be a candidate for some sort of DIY battery replacement.
- cmavr8 12y agoIsn't battery warranties usually 1-year long? A device would have minimum 2-year warranty in Europe so you can find yourself in the middle...
- mikeash 12y agoEven if it's not made to be user-replaceable, surely it can be replaced by someone with the right skills and tools for much less than the full replacement cost of the entire device.
- arrrg 12y agoApple charges something like $120 for changing the battery out. Not worth the stress to micromanage that, really not. It’s never about $2000.
- TheGRS 12y agoI think an environmentalist just died a little bit after reading this. But yes, this is the only sweeping statement that could be universally applied. Anything else is just anecdotal and something to talk about at the next happy hour.
