Putting your server farm on a volcanically active island just connected with 3-4 optical cables has its tradeoffs, too.

- gwern 17y agoIn the last 1100 years, only 18 have erupted. And the terrain of Iceland means the direct threat is minimal: keep your datacenter away from the plate boundary parts of Iceland, and then you only have to worry about toxic clouds every few hundred years. If a company is really saving hundreds of millions over a few years or decades, they can afford to have the datacenter run remotely or sealed off from the outside atmosphere.
