And here you are on hacker news using it to push yours.
- fwn 12y agoHey smhenderson, I'm embarrassed to ask you but I get harassed by someone who thinks I was the person you replied to. He is convinced I was the person and tries to engage me in an argument about gamer gate. However: Can you remember to whom you replied? This would be a tremendous help for me, he already followed me to a different thread.
- DonHopkins 12y agoJust set "showdead" to "yes" and you can see that smhenderson replied "And here you are on hacker news using it to push yours." to fwn's post here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9458661 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9458661 And you can see that the last post in fwn's history now says "Ok, I feel like I'm on /r/all ..." and is downvoted to be light gray: https://news.ycombinator.com/threads?id=fwn https://news.ycombinator.com/threads?id=fwn As anyone can see, when a hacker news user deletes a post, it still shows it to people who have "showdead" set to "yes", followed by the string "[deleted]". He edited it to replace the original comment that smhenderson replied to, but fwn's downvoted comment and smhenderson's reply are all still there. That's how hacker news work. The ball is in fwn's court to explain why his post was so badly downvoted, what it originally said, why he deleted it, what he meant by editing it to say "Ok, I feel like I'm on /r/all ..." before deleting it, and why he then lied point blank twice that "Also I did not edit anything recently, I really think this is a mistake." and "I - still - did not edit anything in the thread you mentioned." So I'm confident that I know that fwn has stopped being honest. The fact that you can't delete postings was designed on purpose by Paul Graham to keep editors honest. But fnw is denying the evidence and blustering instead, which is a pretty good indication that he's the kind of person who would exploit the tragic suicide of a transgendered person to push their misogynistic gamer gate agenda, which is behavior that doesn't belong on hacker news. So the system is working as it was designed. http://www.paulgraham.com/hackernews.html http://www.paulgraham.com/hackernews.html >"I think it's important that a site that kills submissions provide a way for users to see what got killed if they want to. That keeps editors honest, and just as importantly, makes users confident they'd know if the editors stopped being honest. HN users can do this by flipping a switch called showdead in their profile." -Paul Graham

("I feel like I'm on /r/all".). That post got flagged and is now dead. Someone made a different post, and smhenderson replied to this other post. That person then deleted their post. > The fact that you can't delete postings You can delete posts. You've made a mistake. > As anyone can see, when a hacker news user deletes a post, it still shows it to people who have "showdead" set to "yes", followed by the string "[deleted]" No! You can see that a post was deleted. You can't see the deleted post.

- DonHopkins 12y agoOk, your explanation makes sense. I'm sorry, fwn. The way the "[deleted]" was indented at the same level flush with the message it was a reply to made me think that it was about the message at the same indentation, not about a sub-message that had been deleted. I remember seeing the original message but it was deleted before I could reply, and I couldn't reply to yours directly either, so I assumed showdead handled moderator deleted messages the same way as user deleted messages, and you'd edited it then deleted it after it was downvoted. It was my fault, I'm sorry, and I won't make that mistake again.
- fwn 12y agoI was confused as well. I wish I could have explained it! Sorry for being snappy in the end.
- DonHopkins 12y agoI'm even more sorry for going after you like that. Whoever posted the deleted comment was being bad in the wrong place at the wrong time, but I mistakenly thought you were that person, so denying that you'd done it instead of admitting to it would have brought it to a different level of bad. So your snappiness was justified.
- DanBC 12y agoYou might want to post to HN mods to let them know. Or maybe flag the posts. It's clear to me that you wrote a post which got killed by user flags. And that someone wrote a post, which smhenderson replied to, and that person later deleted their post. Their deleted post currently sits below your flagkilled post, and donhopkins has mistakenlythought that your flagkilled post is a self-deleted post and that people with showdead can see user deleted posts (theycan't) and then launched an attack on you.
- fwn 12y agoOh, ok. Well, thank you for this clarification! I have to admit that I also did not understand why it was displayed in the way it is. Thank you! So I guess it's all caused by an interface stumbling block we did not realise.
- smhenderson 12y agoI know this is old now but for the record I do not remember who I replied to by name. I simply remember them making a comment about TWP pushing an agenda by using the story and thought it in poor taste when I read it. I usually try to stay away from the bait but in a moment of irritation I responded. My post is at three now but it was down to at least -2 at some point which in hind sight I was glad about. I should have been smacked down a little for feeding trolls.
