When I have worked at places that required them, I looked at who they gave (didn't care what they said). Recent ex-boss is good -- boss from 15 years ago when you were an intern: troubling. I would not reject on this, but I might ask about it. The best places I have worked don't ask for them and don't check them if you provide them.
