An underappreciated project of mine is [langcodes], a Python package for looking up, comparing, and doing the right thing with IANA language codes. It's not a full-blown toolkit for localization, it just does this one thing well. A project that finally got some appreciation after a couple of years is [python-ftfy], which Fixes Text For You. It repairs mojibake, and generally takes in bad Unicode and outputs good Unicode.
